The end of the year approaches and most have made it back to town. Merios decides to build a garden in town. Papa combines some maps and trains Kervalin a bit. Kervalin decides to go find some horses but runs into a large river. Throwing caution to the wind, and never having swam before, he decides to swim a mile and a half across a river he's never seen the other side of before, because dammnit, the gods told him there were horses across that river and he was going to find them. Unfortunately, that did not work out too well as the cold and swift water brought Kervalin to an untimely end....Kervalin washed ashore and was warmed by a family of otters who mistook him for debris. Upon waking at night, cold and starving, having lost a waterskin and his bindle, Kervalin made a swift move and killed one of the otters. The rest scattered, but he would live on.
